As some of you may know, I am currently in the process of writing a book called The Bag I Call Home, about a rather banal (in terms of design), but rather famous sturdy plastic bag called the red, white, blue bag originating in Japan.
Its rich history takes us around the world from Hong Kong to Ghana, where the bag takes on other meanings, in Paris it enters the world of luxury brands such as Chloé, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga, where the bag is commoditised and offered in different materials and, of course a much higher price point. This bag has a rich political, social and design history through its use by refugees and migrants and the studies around it from practitioners in anthropology, sociology, collective memory, emotional design and others make it interesting reading.
I am delighted to confirm that my research paper has been approved for the Design Principles and Practices Conference with the theme of Tolerances and I will be taking part in this conference next March in Dublin 2027 to present the subject. I hope to see you there!
